Getting started
Everything you need to get explanations out of Retardify quickly. Questions not answered here are in the FAQ.
Quick start
Go to the workspace (the default page). You'll see a composer at the bottom and a short hero with two example buttons.
Paste any code, legal clause, medical text, or dense document into the composer — or click Try a code example to load a sample instantly.
Set the Retardifier slider to the reading level you want (see below), then press Enter or the orange send button.
The explanation streams in. Hover any AI response to reveal the Copy, PDF, and Word export buttons. Ask a follow-up in the same composer — the model has full context.
The Retardifier slider
The slider controls vocabulary depth on a 0–100 scale, always visible in the composer. It's persistent — set it once and every response in the session matches that level until you move it.
Minimal
Just defines jargon inline, keeps the original structure.
Moderate
Replaces jargon with plain synonyms, adds examples.
Significant
Uses lists, analogies, and very short sentences.
Maximum
Grade-school level. Defines every uncommon term.
Retardifier doesn't change what's explained — only how. When in doubt, start around 50 and adjust from there.
Supported file types
Click the upload icon in the composer toolbar, or drag and drop a file directly onto it. The file contents are extracted and dropped into the composer for you to send.

File uploads are available on every plan, up to 20MB per file.
Model selection
The tier selector is in the composer toolbar, next to the upload button.
Fast and cost-effective — great for most documents and everyday simplifying.
Our best models, auto-selected for the job — sharper on code, legal, medical, and nuanced content.
Retardify Pro auto-selects the best underlying model for your content (for example, code gets our strongest code-focused model) — you just pick the tier, we handle the routing.
Follow-up questions
After getting your simplified version, ask a follow-up directly in the same composer — no need to re-paste anything. Retardify remembers the context and answers based on the document you just processed.
Things that work well:
- “What does 'liability' mean in this context?”
- “Can you explain the third paragraph more simply?”
- “What does that second parameter do?”
- “Give me a real-world analogy for this.”
Each follow-up is a separate request and costs credits, same as any other message.
Tips & best practices
- Ask a specific question before pasting your content (e.g. "What are my obligations in this contract?") to focus the explanation.
- For code, set Retardifier to 70+ for detailed, beginner-friendly, line-by-line explanations.
- Start with a lower Retardifier setting (30–40) and increase if it's still not clear enough.
- Break very long documents into logical sections and process each separately for better results.
- Use the Copy, PDF, or Word buttons on any response to save it for later.
- Check your Recent sessions in the sidebar to revisit previous simplifications.
